FoodScan ("we", "our", or "the app") is a mobile app that analyzes food labels using your device's camera and AI. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data is processed, how it is used, and your rights.
FoodScan is a web application packaged as a native mobile app using Capacitor.
Data stored on your device
All scan history, analysis results, user profile settings (such as age group), and app preferences are stored locally on your device using Capacitor's native storage (Preferences / IndexedDB). This data never leaves your device.
Data sent to Google (Gemini API)
When you scan a food label, the captured image is sent directly from your device to Google's Gemini API for parsing. This transmission does not go through our servers. Google processes the image solely to extract label text (ingredients, nutrition facts) and returns the structured result to your device, where all scoring and analysis happens locally.
The image is:
Camera access
FoodScan requests camera permission through your device's operating system in order to capture food label images. Camera access is used only when you actively tap to scan and is not used for any other purpose.
Google Gemini API — Your captured label image is processed by Google's Gemini language model to extract text from the label. Google may process this data according to its own privacy policies. → https://policies.google.com/privacy → https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/terms
App Store / Google Play — When you install FoodScan from an app store, the store provider (Apple or Google) may collect install and device information according to its own privacy policies.
